Midland College is pleased to announce the launch of its Spring 2026 College Classics program, a signature continuing education opportunity designed for lifelong learners aged 50 and older. Now in its decades‑long tradition of engaging local residents, College Classics offers free, non‑credit courses that broaden knowledge and foster intellectual curiosity in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

Originally launched in Spring 1989, College Classics has become one of Midland College’s most popular community programs, providing participants with enriching educational experiences and a chance to remain actively engaged on campus. Courses are offered on the Midland College main campus, at Manor Park, at Casa De Amigos Senior Center, Midland Senior Center, and Southeast Senior Center, and are taught by Midland College faculty and qualified community instructors eager to share their expertise.

“College Classics is all about keeping learning accessible, fun, and meaningful,” said Kori Chisham, Director of Community Programs at Midland College. “It’s exciting to see so many local residents continue their journey of lifelong learning, explore new topics, and connect with others in our community. We love welcoming new participants each semester and celebrating the curiosity and growth of our returning learners.”

The Spring 2026 College Classics course lineup includes:

  • Chair Yoga – A gentle class using a chair for breathing exercises, meditation, and movement to boost well-being, improve flexibility, strength, posture, reduce stress, and enhance mental clarity.

  • The Constitution Today – A discussion-based course focusing on the separation of powers, current events, and the interplay between federal and state governments.

  • English Paper Piecing – Participants create a pin cushion or mug rug using a traditional 1-inch hexagon Grandmother’s Flower Garden block.

  • Intermediate Clogging – A low-impact aerobic workout combined with beginning to intermediate clogging routines.

  • Tai Chi Gung – Gentle movements rooted in Lao Tzu’s teachings that harmonize mind, body, and spirit for improved balance, vitality, and overall wellness.

  • The Psychology of Thinking + Everyday Decisions – Explore how the brain processes information, evaluates risk, and balances logic and intuition in daily decision-making.

  • Opera 101: A Journey into the World of Opera – Presented by Permian Basin Opera, this course highlights acclaimed productions, composers, and the historical and cultural context of their works.

  • Global Connect: Spanish Culture – Build basic Spanish skills through practical conversation and cultural insights.

  • Political Geography (Manor Park Location Only) – Students select countries of interest to explore culture, history, geography, and politics.

To kick off the semester, Midland College will host a College Classics Kickoff Lunch on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the main campus in the Scharbauer Student Center Carrasco Room. The lunch will provide an opportunity for participants to learn more about the upcoming classes, meet instructors, and connect with fellow learners.

Those aged 50 and over are encouraged to register online, by mail, or by phone through the Midland College Continuing Education Office.
