Writing Center sessions are collaborative. Tutors will not simply “fix” or rewrite a paper for the student. Instead, they will talk through the writing with the student, ask questions, give feedback, and help the student understand ways to improve their work.
Students are encouraged to bring:
-
- The assignment instructions or prompt
- A draft, outline, or ideas
- Specific questions or concerns
- Any required formatting guidelines or rubric

AI tools can be helpful for brainstorming, reviewing ideas, checking sentence clarity, and getting quick writing suggestions. However, students are responsible for knowing how AI can and cannot be used in their courses. Expectations may vary by instructor, assignment, or department.
Students who are unsure about using AI for a writing assignment are encouraged to meet with our Academic Success Coach. A coach can help students think through appropriate ways to use AI, understand course expectations, and develop strategies for completing assignments with academic integrity.
This support can help students with:
-
- Understanding when AI use may or may not be appropriate
- Asking the right questions before using AI on an assignment
- Learning how to use AI as a support tool without replacing their own work
- Creating a plan when they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to start
Students should always follow their instructor’s directions and ask their instructor directly if they are unsure whether AI is allowed for a specific assignment or in their class.
Online Essay & Document Review
Students have several options for receiving writing feedback online. These services can help with essays, scholarship essays, resumes, and other academic writing. Some options are reviewed by Midland College staff, while others are available through Tutor.com for faster or 24/7 support.

Students may submit essays, resumes, scholarship essays, and other writing assignments through the Writing Center Document Review Drop Box. A Midland College Writing Center tutor will review the document during our hours of operation.
This service is not just for grammar checks. Our tutors can also provide feedback on:
-
- Organization
- Structure
- Clarity
- Development of ideas
- Flow
- Overall readability
This option is best for students who want feedback from a Midland College Writing Center tutor. Longer documents may take additional time to review. Resumes submitted through this option will be forwarded to the Midland College Career Coordinator.
Tutor.com offers an online essay drop-off review option for students who need writing feedback outside of Writing Center hours or during times when the Writing Center Drop Box is not available, such as May Mini-Mester and December Mini-Mester.
Students can upload their paper to Tutor.com and receive feedback from an online tutor usually within 12 hours. This is a good option for students who need a faster response or want support when Midland College tutors are not available.
To access Tutor.com:
-
- Log in to Canvas.
- Open one of your courses.
- Click Tutor.com in the course navigation menu.
- Choose the essay drop-off option and upload your document for review.
Students also have access to AI writing support through Tutor.com. AI can be helpful for quick, basic feedback, such as grammar, sentence clarity, word choice, and small organization concerns.
While we encourage meeting with a live tutor, this option is good for students who need quick writing suggestions or support. AI feedback should always be reviewed carefully. While AI can be a helpful tool, it may make mistakes or provide suggestions that do not fully match the assignment expectations. Students are responsible for reviewing all feedback and making final decisions about the content they submit.
To access AI Writing Support:
-
- Log in to Canvas.
- Open one of your courses.
- Click Tutor.com in the course navigation menu.
- Choose the AI writing support option and follow the prompts to review your writing.
