Two Midland College Pre-K Academy Teachers Named to National Literacy Honor RollDecember 12, 2025
![]() Midland College is proud to celebrate two outstanding educators from the Pre-K Academy. Colette Burandt and Maranda Hakala have been named to the 2025–2026 Footsteps2Brilliance Brilliant Minds Model Classroom Honor Roll, a national recognition honoring excellence in early literacy instruction. The MC Pre-K Academy, a partnership between Midland College and Midland ISD, provides the community with 279 additional high-quality pre-K seats, expanding access to affordable, developmentally appropriate early childhood education for three- to five-year-olds. The program emphasizes evidence-based curriculum and learning environments built around meaningful, student-centered interactions to ensure children are prepared for success in kindergarten. Burandt and Hakala earned their place on the national Honor Roll by achieving 100% student engagement with the Footsteps2Brilliance early literacy platform. Every child in their classrooms used the program for at least 45 minutes per week over a sustained period, an achievement that requires thoughtful planning, strong routines, and deep commitment to student growth. This milestone carries a significant impact. According to national usage data, children who meet the 45-minute weekly threshold grow their literacy skills three times faster than peers who do not. “Colette and Maranda exemplify the heart of early childhood education,” said Shelly Haney, Associate Vice President of Early Childhood and Dean of Education. “Their commitment to building strong literacy foundations is opening doors for our youngest learners. This recognition affirms the incredible work happening every day in our Pre-K Academy classrooms.” This national distinction recognizes classrooms that model excellence in early literacy innovation in spaces where educators use research-backed tools to accelerate growth and create meaningful early learning experiences. “We are so proud of these two educators,” added Lori Smith, Principal of the Pre-K Academy. “Their dedication to consistent engagement and high-quality instruction ensures our students enter kindergarten ready to thrive. They set a powerful example of what it means to truly believe in each child’s potential.” Burandt and Hakala’s achievement reflects the Pre-K Academy’s mission and Midland College’s ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of readers, learners, and future scholars. Midland College congratulates these two outstanding educators on this well-deserved national recognition. |
