Training the Teachers of Tomorrow: How Midland College is Investing in the Future of EducationApril 17, 2025
![]() By Shelly Haney, Executive Director, Teacher Preparation and Childcare At Midland College, we know that a strong educational system starts with strong educators — and we’re proud to be part of building that foundation right here in the Permian Basin. As someone who works closely with students every day, I see firsthand the passion, commitment, and drive they bring to the table as they prepare to become tomorrow’s teachers. Meeting the Need, Shaping the FutureFor students considering a career in education, the opportunity to change lives — especially in their own community — is both powerful and rewarding. Teachers play a critical role in shaping future generations, and here in the Permian Basin, that impact is deeply felt. Beyond the classroom connection, a teaching career also offers increasing financial incentives. Like many regions across the country, the Permian Basin is working to ensure every classroom is led by a well-prepared, passionate educator. School districts, including Midland ISD, are rising to the challenge by developing creative, forward-thinking strategies to attract, support, and retain high-quality teachers who can make a lasting impact. Thanks to programs like Teacher Incentive Allotment and Opportunity Culture, new and experienced teachers alike can earn a sustainable income while doing work that matters. Midland College helps future educators tap into these opportunities, providing a direct pathway to a meaningful profession with real potential for personal and professional growth. Midland College's Commitment to Educator PreparationAt Midland College, our focus is on producing classroom-ready educators equipped to meet the demands of today's diverse learning environments. Our curriculum is designed to provide hands-on experiences and practical training, ensuring that our graduates are prepared to lead from day one. Whether aspiring to teach Early Childhood, Math, History, Science, Government, Music, or other subjects, students will find comprehensive support at Midland College. Expanding Pathways Through University PartnershipsWe also understand the importance of seamless transitions for students aiming to further their education. Midland College has established articulation agreements with various universities, and our curriculum maps offer guided pathways for general transfer to our top five receiving institutions. In fact, this fall, the University of Texas Permian Basin will begin offering two upper-level education courses right here on the MC campus — bringing the university experience closer to home for our students. This exciting development means future educators can continue their journey toward a bachelor’s degree in education without leaving Midland. It's a powerful example of how MC and UTPB are working together to break down barriers and ensure more students can pursue their calling to teach. Investing in the FutureBy addressing the teacher shortage head-on and collaborating with local districts, Midland College is committed to strengthening the educational landscape of the Permian Basin. Through our programs and partnerships, we're not just preparing students to graduate — we're preparing them to lead classrooms, inspire young minds, and shape the future of our community. —--------------------------------------------------- Are you interested in a career as a teacher?
