As part of the joint College & Career Academies partnership between Midland College
(MC) and the Midland Independent School District (MISD), high school students are
able to participate in hands-on pharmacy technician training. This spring, MISD high
school seniors who are enrolled in the pharmacy technician class shadowed pharmacists
and pharmacy technicians at Albertsons locations, Graham’s Pharmacy, Health South
and Midland Memorial Hospital.
“There is a huge demand for pharmacy technicians,” said Marisol Regalado, MC Pharmacy
Technician instructor. “I worked as a pharmacy tech when I was in college, and it
really helped in financing my tuition and other college expenses. The pay is better
than working as a clerk in a drugstore or other retail establishment, and it’s exciting
to work side by side with professional pharmacists. It’s also a great opportunity
to gain knowledge of medications for those wanting to pursue careers in healthcare
fields.”
“We love having the students shadow our pharmacists and pharmacy techs,” said Donnelle
Slentz, owner of the two Midland Graham’s Pharmacy locations. “We need more skilled
pharmacy techs, and we are delighted to be working with Midland College to help provide
this in-demand skill for the Midland workforce. We look forward to working with Midland
College personnel to expand clinical opportunities at our pharmacies even more.”
The students enrolled in the academy partnership will take the Pharmacy Technician
Certification Board exam during the second week in May. Once they pass the exam,
they will be certified pharmacy technicians.
