Students enrolled in business courses at the Midland College Williams Regional Technical Training Center (WRTTC) will be joining forces with the Goodnight-Loving Trail, Inc. and the Pecos County Historical Commission to help coordinate the annual Horse Head Crossing Celebration of History event on November 5 and 6.

Prior to the event, students will participate in phone bank calling to contact past attendees.  Then, during the event, they will assist at the check-in booth with data entry responsibilities.

“This will be a wonderful opportunity for students to not only learn the importance of volunteering, but also practice some of the skills that they learn in the classroom, such as phone etiquette and manipulating data,” Matt Tarpley, WRTTC director, said.

The WRTTC is Midland College’s only branch campus and is located at 1309 W. Interstate 10 in Ft. Stockton.  Students helping with the event are taking classes from Anita Shellenberger, who has been teaching at the WRTTC fulltime since 1999.  Prior to that, Shellenberger was a part-time lab instructor at the center.  She has instructed numerous Pecos County residents in office and business practices.

The Horse Head Crossing Celebration of History event takes place on November 5-6 at Farm Road 11, twelve miles northwest of Girvin in Pecos County.  Activities during the two days will include historical re-enactments, a swap meet, campfires and traditional chuck wagon food.  Historically, Horse Head Crossing was a major landmark on the trail west as one of a few fordable sections of the Pecos River in West Texas and as the first reliable source of water for about 75 miles on the route from the east.  For more information about the event, visit the Pecos County Historical Commission website
