On Wednesday, October 3, members of the Uptown Business & Professional Women (BPW)
presented the Midland College Foundation with a check for $6,200 for the Uptown BPW
endowed scholarship, which is awarded to a female student attending Midland College.
For the past several years, the organization has contributed toward the scholarship
from fundraising efforts such as their annual Bunco party and the Uptown BPW Woman
of Achievement Banquet. One of the past recipients was Adriana Ortega, a high school dropout who first attended
Midland College seeking a high school equivalency diploma and then continued her college
studies obtaining an associate degree in Business Systems. She is now pursuing Midland
College's Bachelor of Applied Technology degree in Organizational Management. "It wasn't easy raising a family, working and going to school," said Ortega. "My
family had to make lots of sacrifices, but it is worth it. Thankfully, Midland College
scholarships like the Uptown BPW scholarship helped with college costs." With the addition of the recent $6,200 gift from Uptown BPW, the organization's endowed
scholarship now totals over $90,000. The interest from this endowment is used to
award the annual Uptown BPW Scholarship at Midland College.
