Recently two Midland College (MC) student organizations received accolades and honors.
Phi Theta Kappa and the Chemistry Club are two of the most active student organizations
on the MC campus.
Phi Theta Kappa Internationally, PTK is the oldest, largest and most prestigious honor society servicing
two-year colleges around the world. Membership is based on superior academic achievements
and is conferred only by invitation to students who have a minimum 3.5 grade point
average.
During the Texas Regional PTK Conference in March, the Midland College PTK chapter
was named as a Five Star Distinction chapter, the highest distinction for chapters
in Phi Theta Kappa, and MC received the following awards:
Tejas Award for an Outstanding Friend of Texas – Ken Riley, MC director of Physical
Plant, who demonstrates exemplary support of Phi Theta Kappa.
Horizon Award – Dr. Lea Keesee – advisors who have gone the extra mile (Dr. Terry
Gilmour received this award in 2017.)
Hall of Honor for Alumni – Lauren Bell – award of merit for promoting the Hallmarks
of PTK
Chapter Award – Honors in Action and College Project Participation
District 1 Hall of Honor – Midland College PTK members Ryan Adams, Brandee Brown,
Jacob Baley, Tracey Taylor, Katherine Whiteman and Midland College PTK advisors Dr.
Lea Keesee and Dr. Terry Gilmour
Hall of Honor for Chapter Officer – Ryan Adams, Midland College PTK president, for
embodiment of the Hallmarks of the Society
Honors in Action Award of Merit for the Honors Study Topic Theme of Beauty and Vulgarity
– top three in the state
District 1 Vice President for the Texas Region – Midland College will be represented
by PTK member Jamie Parks.
Chemistry Club Also, in March, members of the MC Chemistry Club attended the American Chemical Society
national meeting in New Orleans. During the meeting, the club was recognized as an
Outstanding Chapter and received the Green Chemistry Award.
