Midland College Phi Theta Kappa students attended the Texas Honors Institute held
at Dallas Baptist University in Dallas, Texas on July 27-29. The conference is designed
to develop leadership and research skills.
Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society for community college students.
To be invited for membership, students must maintain a 3.5 GPA after the completion
of 12 semester hours. Typically, 300 Midland College students meet the eligibility
requirements (3.5 GPA & minimum 12 hours towards an associate’s degree) each semester.
"Membership and acceptance into the Honors Program and/or Phi Theta Kappa provides
scholarship opportunities, helps to develop leadership skills, and allows students
to be part of a network of fellow scholars,” said Terry Gilmour, professor of Government
and director of the MC Honors Program.
The Honors Program at Midland College is designed for students to work one on one
with their professors to create a project/paper/presentation that takes them beyond
the normal course requirements and provides an enhanced creative and supportive learning
environment and special recognition for talented students. Currently the Honors Program
has over 100 students, each of whom are working under the guidance of MC faculty toward
project completion. Students must have a 3.2 GPA in order to be admitted to the program.
