Texas Mutual Insurance Company is awarding a $100,000 grant to Midland College (MC) to continue funding for the Risk Management Institute at Midland College, which provides workplace safety courses for community employers, workers and the general public.

This is the 14th consecutive year that Texas Mutual, the state’s leading provider of workers’ compensation insurance, has given a $100,000 grant to the college to support the Risk Management Institute.

“We are so grateful for our continued partnership with Texas Mutual, which allows us to provide much-needed workplace education for Midland-area workers," Lyndolyn Pervier, director of Workforce Continuing Education at Midland College, said. "We’re proud that we’ve been able to offer these courses for more than a decade to local employees, thanks to Texas Mutual’s support of the Risk Management Institute."

Since 1999, Texas Mutual has awarded $7.6 million in safety education grants, and more than 30,000 students have attended free safety institutes offered at various colleges. Midland College is one of 10 community colleges in Texas that provides safety classes via funding from Texas Mutual.

More than 6,500 people have participated in 1,040 courses and certification programs at MC’s Risk Management Institute since its inception in May 2006. In line with the area’s oil and gas boom, the majority of participants are from the oil and gas industry, followed by attendees from city government, health care and other industries.

The 2019 schedule at the Risk Management Institute includes courses on back safety, fall protection, OSHA training, confined spaces, drug and alcohol awareness for supervisors, CPR/first aid, among others.

“For 20 years we’ve partnered with Texas community colleges to ensure tens of thousands of workers get the education they need to work safely,” said Eric Bourquin, vice president of safety services at Texas Mutual. “We are happy to continue our support to these colleges, so safety programs can be available to their communities and available to employees across the state. These safety courses, along with many other company initiatives, demonstrate our commitment to creating a stronger, safer Texas.”
