Nine students have successfully completed Midland College’s (MC) first English as
a Second Language (ESL) Certified Nurse Aide class. The students were honored at
a ceremony on Thursday, December 7, at MC’s Cogdell Learning Center, located at 201
W. Florida Street in Midland.
“There is a huge demand for certified nurse aides in Midland,” explained Wendy Wood-Collins,
MC director of Health Sciences Continuing Education. “Our regular CNA classes are
always full, but the demand still outweighs the supply. Several students taking ESL
classes at Cogdell indicated an interest in pursuing careers in the health industry.
So, we decided to offer a class specifically for them. These students have passed
the training and are now prepared to take the state certification exam. They can
then obtain jobs working as professional CNAs in Midland and may decide to take additional
classes in health careers. This class was a tremendous success, and we plan to offer
more CNA classes for our ESL students in the future.”
Students completing MC’s first ESL Certified Nurse Aide training program were Ana
Cabrera, Judith Ron de Esteves, Griselda Gomez, Jeanny Gonzalez, Amparo Grimes, Mayra
Guzman, Elizabeth Martinez, Consuelo Salas and Guadalupe Soto.
