Midland College is proud to announce the groundbreaking of the June and Frank Cowden, Jr. Dining Hall, which will add 18,600 square feet to the existing Scharbauer Student Center at a cost of $8.5 million. The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Monday, September 10, at 11:00 a.m. on the east side of the Scharbauer Student Center on the main MC campus.
Architects for this project are Parkhill, Smith & Cooper. When completed, the dining
hall will accommodate 480 people with a commercial kitchen to support daily dining
and campus catering. In addition, there will be an outdoor patio area that will seat
70 people and a Community Room for use by community organizations that will seat 90
people.
“Midland College is proud to have the new dining hall bear the name of June & Frank
Cowden, Jr., a pioneering Midland family,” said Steve Thomas, president of MC. “We
are deeply committed to continuous improvement, service to students and community
impact. This is an exciting time at Midland College.”
June and Frank Cowden married in 1945, shortly after Frank returned from serving in
the Army Air Corps during World War II. They were married until Frank’s death in 2006.
June continues to live in Midland, and her daughter Linda is an elected member of
the Midland College Board of Trustees and a member of the Midland College Foundation
Board of Directors.
