For the past 27 years, Larry Lozano has quietly been working and raising a family,
contributing to the Midland community through hard work and volunteerism. Since 2021,
he has been the business manager for Midland Pediatrics where he supervises the entire
clinic and handles credentialing, insurance oversight, marketing, equipment and supplies
for the busy practice of four doctors, three nurse practitioners, a pediatric cardiologist,
two lactation consultants and numerous licensed healthcare professionals and office
staff.
“I’ve always been employed in business management,” Lozano explained. “It all started
in 1997 when I received a certificate in Small Business Management from Midland College.”
Lozano grew up in Pecos, TX and graduated from Pecos High School in 1996. During
the year that he was enrolled in the Small Business Management program at Midland
College (MC), he also was a student worker at the MC Cogdell Learning Center. After
receiving his certificate, he assisted with various small business startups. In 1997,
Lozano married his wife Virginia, a graduate of Midland Lee High School (now Legacy
High), and the couple started a family a few years later.
“I continued with my education at Midland College off and on,” he said. “I could
only take a few hours each semester while also balancing the demands of family and
a job.”
However, once Lozano attained his associate degree from MC in 2019, there was no stopping
him. Just one year later, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration
in Management from the University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB), and in 2022, he received
a Master’s of Business Administration degree, also from UTPB.
“I was working for the City of Midland as a safety compliance officer and realized
that I needed a degree to move up the career ladder and/or get a job in management,”
Lozano said. “My children were older, so it was easier to balance school and family
life.”
In 2021, Dr. W.C. Watson approached Lozano about helping to expand his pediatrics
clinic.
“I had known Dr. Watson for some time,” Lozano stated. “He was my children’s pediatrician,
and he was aware of my management and entrepreneurial background. Since the late
1990s, I have consulted with several local small businesses, especially in the areas
of human relations, budgeting and expansion. So, I started helping Dr Watson with
the business side of his practice, and when the practice started to grow, I stepped
into the role of business manager.”
In addition to the demands of being the chief administrator for a busy pediatrics
clinic, Lozano also finds time to serve the community. He currently is a member of
the MC Alumni Association Leadership Council, and he also serves as communications
officer for the Legacy High School Mighty Rebel Band. (His son Lorenzo, a senior
at Legacy High, is a member of the band and plays the tuba.)
Lozano said that the two things most important to him are family and helping people
achieve their best. His favorite pastimes are spending time with his family, which
consists of his wife Virginia, daughter Justice, son Lorenzo, a cat and four dogs:
an English Bulldog, German Shepherd, Catahoula/Blue Heeler and Chiweenie. He is
a self-proclaimed “grill master,” a “docuseries junkie” and an avid Dallas Cowboys
fan.
Lozano also strongly believes in mentoring others, especially those within his work
family at Midland Pediatrics.
“It’s important that I help the members of my team succeed,” he said. “When they
succeed. I win. Throughout my career in management and as a business consultant,
I’ve tried to live by the words that a good friend once told me: ‘Don’t ever make
people be like you; help them be better than they are.’”
