During the month of October, students in the Midland College (MC) Cosmetology department
donated their time and skills in order to raise money for Pink the Basin. The department
sold pink hair extensions for $5 each, and the students volunteered their time and
talent to put the extensions in hair. MC students, employees and the public wore
the extensions for several weeks to draw awareness to breast cancer prevention.
In addition, the Cosmetology students, along with MC’s Massage Therapy students gave
haircuts and massages at the Midland YMCA during the month of October in order to
raise additional funds for Pink the Basin.
The students raised a total of $904, and on Wednesday, November 8, a check was presented
to Pink the Basin, a non-profit organization that provides funding for mammography
services to women in the Permian Basin who cannot afford a mammogram due to a lack
of or inadequate insurance.
“We have been doing the hair extensions for several years,” explained Michael Fields,
MC Cosmetology program chair. “It’s always a popular service. People start calling
us in September to schedule their appointments. This year, we were thrilled to have
the opportunity to partner with the Massage Therapy program and the YMCA to raise
additional funding for Pink the Basin. We not only wanted to do something for breast
cancer prevention, but also wanted to instill a sense of volunteerism in our students.
Students need to realize that when they complete our training programs and earn licenses,
volunteering and philanthropy are a vital part of giving back to the community that
supports their business.”
