On Tuesday, November 26, at 11:00 a.m., the Midland College Business & Economic Development
Center (BEDC) presents a “Shop Local” cookie to Small Business Owner, Shelly Vargas
with Carissa’s Flowers, at 3302 N Midkiff Road, Midland, Texas 79705.
Midland College’s Business and Economic Development Center encourages shoppers to
eat and celebrate small businesses this holiday season. Small Business Saturday is
held each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to encourage people to shop at independently-owned
businesses. Shopping small is a concrete way to support the small businesses that
generate two of every three new jobs.
This year, Small Business Saturday 2019 falls on November 30. Small Business Saturday
occurs the day after Black Friday and two days before Cyber Monday. It is an all-day
event. The Small Business Administration estimates that 108 million consumers supported
small businesses in 2018 on Small Business Saturday.
Local Business owner of Guardian Plasma Works, Craig Feuer said, “As a small local
business, we strongly believe our product quality and customer service is unbeatable,
but we heavily rely on local support. "Spending your money locally helps stimulate
what the community has to offer.”
The BEDC has assisted hundreds of entrepreneurs establish a business since its inception
at Midland College in 1985. This past year, the BEDC created the Florida Avenue Market
at the MC Cogdell Learning Center to help 52 participating local vendors increase
sales and their visibility.
The Florida Avenue Market “helped our business outreach, but also made us aware of
other local businesses” said Feuer.
