Every spring, I sit across from students who are right on the edge of something big. They’re about to graduate high school. They’re excited, they’re nervous, and almost every one of them, along with their parents, comes in with the same question: “What’s next?”

Some students have had their plans mapped out for years. Many have not. One of the first things I tell them is simple. “You don’t have to have it all figured out right now.”

I also hear another concern pretty often. Students and families wonder if starting at a community college is really the right move. Despite the progress we’ve made in showing different pathways into a career, there is still a belief that where you start defines where you will end up. What I have seen, year after year, is the opposite. MC’s commitment to student success is what makes it such a great place to start your education.

A Strong Start Without the Overwhelm

The transition from high school to college is real. Classes are more demanding. Campuses can feel overwhelming. Everything is new, and that can shake your confidence, even for strong students. That is one of the reasons I believe so strongly in what MC offers.

At Midland College, you are not walking into a massive lecture hall where it is easy to get lost. Our student-to-faculty ratio is about 17 to 1, which means you are in classrooms where instructors know your name, where you can ask questions, and where support is part of the experience.

Start Here, Go Anywhere

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that starting at a community college means you are waiting to get to the real opportunity. That could not be further from the truth. You are not behind. You are building from day one … and the opportunities are endless.

From day one, Midland College students are getting hands-on experience early through labs, clinicals, internships, and industry exposure. We have built strong partnerships with universities and industry leaders so students have real opportunities waiting for them. Whether the goal is to transfer, enter the workforce, or both, those connections matter. We offer a transfer fair where students get an opportunity to meet with different universities and ask questions about scholarships and transferring.

In fact, Midland College has more than 15 university partnerships that allow students to seamlessly transfer to a four-year university. Programs like the Texas A&M-Diamondback Engineering Academy at MC give students the chance to start their engineering degree locally while staying on track to transfer to a top-tier university. The Primary Care Pathway Program, a partnership with the University of North Texas, allows students to start locally, and become a physician in seven fast-paced years. The Midland College and UT Permian Basin Education Pathway allows students to earn their associate degree at MC and then seamlessly transfer during their last semester to UTPB to earn their Bachelor of Arts in Education.

Plus, we have a partnership with Midland Memorial Hospital for our ADN and LVN nursing students.

These are just a few examples of how starting here takes our students far.

A Smarter Financial Decision

I am also very honest with families about the financial side of college. Let’s be honest: College is an investment.

Starting at Midland College allows students to complete core coursework at a significantly lower cost, without sacrificing quality. That means less debt, less pressure, and more flexibility when it is time to transfer or step into a career. That is a strategic decision that sets you up long-term.

Not only is MC more affordable, but each year, we award more than $2 million in scholarships. That doesn’t even include the state and federal financial aid we’re able to help students receive. I can’t tell you how many parents have shared with me how relieved they feel knowing their student can get a strong start without unnecessary financial strain. Students feel that relief as well.

Support That Makes a Difference

If there is one thing I wish every student understood before choosing a college, it is how important support is.

Success isn’t just about capability. It’s also about having the right people in your corner. Here, that looks like advisors who help you map out your path, instructors who care about your progress, and a campus built around helping you move forward.

Whether you are the first in your family to attend college or you have always known this was your next step, you will not be navigating this alone. We offer additional support for first-generation college students through our First Generation Initiative program. This program provides opportunities for one-on-one advising and personalized coaching on topics specific to the first-generation experience.

You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out

I always tell students this, and I mean it. It is okay not to know exactly what you want to do yet. That is more common than most people think. I began as a Midland College student in 2001, majoring in Biology with the goal of becoming a doctor. I later built a career in the environmental field as an analytical chemist before returning to Midland College as an advisor. In this role, I discovered a passion for student success coaching and supporting students in reaching their goals.

Midland College gives you the space to explore different options, try new things, and figure out what fits without the pressure of getting it perfect right away. Some of the most successful students I have worked with did not start with a clear plan. They found their direction along the way.

So, when I talk to students, I do not try to convince them there is only one right path. There is not. But I do believe there is a smart way to start.

Starting at Midland College means building confidence, gaining experience, making a sound financial decision, and giving yourself the space to grow into what comes next.

From where I sit, watching students take that first step every day, starting at MC is the smartest move you can make.
