Midland College Recognizes Chap Champion at 2025 Honors ConvocationMay 05, 2025
![]() On Sunday, May 4, during Midland College’s annual Honors Convocation at the Al G.
Langford Chaparral Center, Phillip Mancha was named the college’s 2025 Chap Champion,
an award that recognizes students who exemplify positivity, leadership, and encouragement
both in and out of the classroom.
Honors Convocation is an evening dedicated to celebrating student academic achievement,
leadership, and excellence. The event recognized accomplishments in categories such
as the President’s List, Honors Program, Phi Theta Kappa, Sigma Kappa Delta English Honor Society, Student Government Association, First-Generation Ambassadors, Outstanding Major Awards, and Special Program Awards.
The Chap Champion award, now in its second year, is presented to a student who leads
by example, encourages classmates, and actively engages with instructors and peers.
Students are nominated by Midland College faculty, and a selection committee carefully
reviews the nominations. The scholarship is made possible by the MC Faculty Senate through proceeds from its annual chili cook-off.
This year’s honoree, Phillip Mancha, is a student in MC’s Automotive Technology program. As a single father and returning student, Mancha has faced significant challenges
but has remained steadfast in his commitment to personal growth and educational success.
Faculty and fellow students alike describe him as a mentor and positive force in the
classroom.
“Phillip’s journey is a powerful reminder that success often follows perseverance,”
said Dr. Michael Dixon, Midland College Provost. “He exemplifies what it means to
be a Chap Champion — he shows up with a great attitude, supports others, and embraces
every opportunity to grow. His story is not only inspiring but a model for others
to follow.”
“Phillip Mancha is an excellent student who is deeply committed to his education,"
said MC's Applied Tech Department Chair Erick Gutierrez. "He consistently brings a positive attitude to
class and is always ready to lend a hand to others. Although Phillip isn’t your typical
college student, his persistence and attitude make it a pleasure to teach and remind
me why I love what I do.”
Despite the obstacles of returning to school later in life, Mancha has maintained
a 3.4 GPA and become a trusted source of advice and support for younger classmates.
His resilience and leadership reflect the spirit and community of Midland College.
Midland College remains committed to student success and increasing access to education
for all. Through personalized support, strong faculty mentorship, and workforce-driven
programs, the college continues to serve as a launching point for students at every
stage of life who are ready to learn, grow, and make an impact in their communities.
