Over the years, I have watched so many students enter Midland College Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) programs with a mix of hope, determination, and sometimes a little fear. Many of them have faced challenges that made completing high school feel out of reach, but they come to Midland College ready to take the next step. And every time, I am reminded why Midland College’s GED program is so important.

This program helps adults rebuild confidence, gain new skills, and open doors they may have thought were closed. Earning a Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency (TxCHSE) is a milestone that changes lives. It gives students the opportunity to pursue well-paying careers, enter workforce training programs, or continue on to higher education … and it all starts here at Midland College.

One of the most powerful changes we witness in the GED program happens right after a student passes their first test. That moment frequently marks a shift from self-doubt to belief. Confidence begins to grow, participation increases, and students start to see themselves as capable learners. From there, progress becomes more attainable, both academically and personally.

A Program Designed Around Students

While many students initially come to the AEL department for their GED, they often discover they are gaining much more. Our program is designed to address multiple needs simultaneously: academic preparation, career and college transitions, and personal support.

Our GED classes are completely free, available to anyone 17 or older (with accommodations for 16-year-old students through court order). Classes are offered in English and Spanish. Instruction is available in person in Midland and Fort Stockton, as well as online to provide flexibility for working adults. GED courses include Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, and Science, with a focus on preparing students not only to pass the TxCHSE, but to succeed beyond it.

Students balance coursework with jobs, family responsibilities, and life challenges. Along the way, they form connections with instructors, staff, and one another. Many students share that the AEL department becomes a place where they can talk openly about their struggles, build friendships, and feel supported. For some, it is the first time they have experienced an educational environment where they feel seen, valued, and genuinely cared for. I have celebrated with students when they passed an official test and felt their excitement when they walked across the stage after completing their GED. Those moments are unforgettable, and they are the reason we do what we do.

The Impact Is Real

Across Texas, earning a GED has been shown to improve earning potential and career opportunities. Adults with a High School Equivalency certificate often have access to better-paying jobs and training programs that can lead to long-term success. But what I see every day goes beyond statistics. I see students gaining confidence, discovering new possibilities, and setting an example for their children, families, and communities.

Results That Reflect Growth and Trust

Last year, our AEL program celebrated 150 GED graduates, each representing a significant personal achievement. For many students, earning the GED is not the final destination, but a foundation for future goals.

A critical part of that journey is the support provided by our Career Navigator, Heba Thomas. Heba works closely with students to help them explore the next steps, address concerns, and transition confidently into postsecondary education. Her ability to build trust and strong relationships has made a meaningful difference. In the past year, she helped 70 students successfully transition into Midland College for post-secondary education, guiding them through what can often feel like an overwhelming process.

Here for Every Step of the Journey

Completing a GED can feel daunting, but no one does it alone here at MC. Our team supports every student every step of the way. From the first class to test preparation, we celebrate every milestone, and every success is a reminder of why access and student support matter so much.

When students realize they are capable, and that people are invested in their success, the impact extends far beyond the classroom. Midland College AEL programs play a vital role in helping individuals move forward with confidence and a renewed sense of possibility.

If you have been thinking about completing your High School Equivalency, I encourage you to take that step. We are here to guide you, teach you, and celebrate your achievements along the way.

At Midland College, we see the potential in every student, and we are proud to help them take that next step toward a brighter future.
