In a moment that mirrored the excitement of an athletic signing day, Midland College and Midland ISD came together to celebrate a different kind of commitment rooted in skill, purpose, and career readiness.

At the first-ever Applied Technology Signing Day, high school seniors formally committed to continuing their education at Midland College and pursuing hands-on training in high-demand technical fields. Students signed to continue their education in programs including Automation, Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, EMS and Fire, Nursing, HVAC, Petroleum Energy Technology, Welding, and Natural Gas Compression.

The ceremony marked a significant milestone for the students and reflected a shared vision between Midland ISD and Midland College to prepare graduates for success beyond high school.

By signing their letters of commitment, students pledged to enroll in Midland College’s Applied Technology programs and dedicate themselves to developing the technical skills, professionalism, and work ethic required in their chosen fields. Their commitment includes attending classes consistently, completing coursework, participating in hands-on training, and upholding the standards and expectations of their programs.

“The students signing today are choosing a path that requires discipline, focus, and a willingness to put in the work,” said Pete Avalos, Dean of Applied Technology at Midland College. “Our programs are designed to mirror real-world expectations, and that means hands-on training, high standards, and a clear connection to the careers waiting for them. We are proud to support them as they take this next step.”

The event highlights the strong partnership between Midland ISD and Midland College, grounded in a shared mission to ensure every student graduates ready for college, a career, or the military. Through this collaboration, students are provided clear pathways from high school into high-quality technical education and ultimately into the workforce.

“I’m proud to see Midland College recognizing students who choose to continue their journey through applied technology training after high school. These pathways open doors to meaningful careers and equip students for high-need jobs right here in the Permian Basin,” said Jeff Horner, Executive Director of Career and Technical Education at Midland ISD.

A key component of the event was Midland College’s commitment to access and student success. Students who signed are eligible to receive a scholarship of up to $1,000 through Midland College’s Applied Technology Division, providing early support as they begin their technical training.

Midland College’s Applied Technology programs are designed to meet the evolving needs of West Texas industries, offering world-class training that blends classroom instruction with real-world application. Students gain experience through long hours in labs, mastering equipment and learning not only how systems work, but why. This approach builds both confidence and competence.

The impact of this commitment extends far beyond the students themselves. The

Permian Basin is entering a period of sustained growth that will require a strong pipeline of highly skilled workers across energy, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and the skilled trades. With projections showing a need for as many as 175,000 additional workers in our region by 2040, expanding access to high-quality career and technical training is essential to sustaining long-term economic strength and opportunity. By investing in these students, Midland College and Midland ISD are helping ensure the continued growth and stability of the Permian Basin workforce.
