Midland College celebrated the grand opening of its new 1,830-square-foot Esports
Arena, the largest of its kind in the Permian Basin. The event brought together students,
faculty, staff, administration, and local gamers to experience the innovative space
designed to support student success and prepare them for careers in gaming and related
industries.
The Esports Arena features PC gaming stations, Nintendo Switch free play, and classic
arcade machines, including Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga. Attendees participated in a High-Score
Tournament on the arcade machines, with prizes for top scorers provided by Retrofunk
in the form of gift cards.
“Investing in projects like the Chaps Esports Arena is central to the Foundation’s
mission,” said Dr. Adrian Vega, Vice President of Institutional Advancement. “Our
donors understand the importance of supporting spaces that strengthen student engagement
and success. Their generosity allows us to create opportunities that truly keep students
at the heart of Midland College.”
Dr. Andrew Latham, Advisor of the MC Gaming Club, added, “After three years of planning
and effort, this space is beyond anything I could have imagined. I am thrilled to
see Midland College lead the way in esports for the Permian Basin and provide students
with an environment where they can grow their skills and pursue their passions.”
The Chaps Esports Arena represents a growing recognition of esports as a mainstream
pathway for student involvement and a dynamic avenue for building digital skills,
teamwork, and community. With the support of the Midland College Foundation and dedicated
staff across campus, Midland College continues to strengthen its commitment to providing
innovative spaces that help students succeed both in and out of the classroom.
The Esports Arena is now open for students to explore, with spaces designed for friendly
competition, teamwork, and skill development.
