Texas Mutual Insurance Company is awarding a $100,000 grant to Midland College to continue funding for the Risk Management Institute at Midland College, which provides workplace safety courses for community employers, workers and the general public.

This is the 16th consecutive year that Texas Mutual, the state’s leading provider of workers’ compensation insurance, has given a $100,000 grant to the college to support the Risk Management Institute.

“For 16 years, we’ve been proud to partner with Texas Mutual to the benefit of our local businesses and employees,” said Steve Thomas, Ph.D., president of Midland College. “Thanks to their generous investment in our program, we will continue to provide valuable resources and training to our community making the Midland area a safer place to live.”

Over a 22-year period, Texas Mutual has awarded $9.9 million in safety education grants, and more than 35,000 students have attended free or discounted safety training offered at various colleges. The safety education grants are one way Texas Mutual is delivering on its commitment to build a stronger, safer Texas.

While many of the Midland College Risk Management Institute courses have been solely offered online this year, the institute has enrolled more than 130 students for 2021 and is beginning the transition to in-person courses.

The 2021 schedule at the Risk Management Institute includes new courses on new hire orientation and drug alcohol reasonable suspicion, among others such as back safety, fall protection, OSHA training, confined spaces, CPR/first aid and more.

“For more than two decades, we have proudly partnered with colleges across Texas in providing their local communities access to safety programs,” said Eric Bourquin, vice president of safety services at Texas Mutual. “We know that a strong workforce is a safe one, and we’re proud to continue investing in these programs on our journey to create a stronger, safer Texas.”
