Scott Bain, Texas Mutual’s regional manager of safety services will award a $100,000 grant to Midland College (MC) so that the college can offer FREE safety classes to the community.

This is the 13th consecutive year that Texas Mutual, the state’s leading provider of workers’ compensation insurance, has given the $100,000 grant to the college to support the Risk Management Institute. MC’s Risk Management Institute was one of the first programs in the state to be recognized by Texas Mutual as exemplary.

“Because of Midland College's long-standing partnership with Texas Mutual, organizations throughout the Permian Basin have been able to take advantage of these important safety classes," Dr. Thomas said. "We deeply appreciate Texas Mutual's investment to partner with us to provide safety-related courses to the Midland-area workforce."

More than 5,000 people have participated in the programs at MC’s Risk Management Institute since its inception in May 2006. The majority of participants are from the oil and gas industry, followed by attendees from city government, health care and other industries.

The 2018 schedule at the Risk Management Institute includes courses on back safety, fall protection, OSHA training, confined spaces, drug and alcohol awareness for supervisors, CPR/first aid, among others.

“Workplace safety education has always been and will continue to be a sound investment, and we are happy to partner with Midland College again to make safety programs a priority in the area,” Bain said. “The courses that will be available to area employees, along with other safety institutes around the state, help workers across Texas be safer and more successful on the job. These grants and the other safety programs from Texas Mutual demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that millions of workers get the education they need to work safely.”
