On Thursday, May 10, Midland College (MC) will partner with the Alzheimer’s Association Greater West Texas Chapter to offer a ½-day caregiver conference entitled “Taking Control:  Navigating the Issues Associated with Dementia.”  The workshop is FREE; however, there is a $15 charge for those who desire an official continuing education certificate for professional development verification.  The workshop will be held from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 noon at the MC Advanced Technology Center (ATC), 3200 W. Cuthbert (corner of Midkiff and Cuthbert) in Midland.

 Workshop topics include

  • Legal and Financial Matters presented by Linda & Michael Melson, Melson Associates
  • Scams presented by Terrence Sommers, Permian Basin Law Enforcement Academy
  • Knowing When More Care is Needed presented by Susie Marquez, MS, LPS-S, Texas Tech Physicians of Midland
  • Caregiver Stress presented by Shelly Blancett, Ph.D., Texas Tech Physicians of Midland

“We have been partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association to offer seminars and workshops for the past several years,” explained Kimberly Daw with the Midland College Health Sciences Continuing Education department.  “They are targeted to licensed professionals as well as those who have loved ones suffering with the effects of memory loss and dementia.”

The seminars hosted by the MC Health Sciences Continuing Education department are part of a much larger partnership between the college and the Alzheimer’s Association.  The Association’s annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s is held every fall on the MC main campus.  Also, every September children and staff of the MC Children’s Center at Manor Park participate in a special march through the halls at Manor Park collecting change from residents and staff, which is then donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.

“As more and more families across America are affected by Alzheimer’s disease, many children and college students are becoming aware of this heartbreaking brain disease"through personal experiences in their own families and watching friends and neighbors,” said Rebecca Bell, MC executive director of Institutional Advancement.  “The partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association Greater West Texas Chapter is one way that Midland College is fulfilling its mission of providing education and service for our entire community.”
