New Technology Additions and Plans for a Remodel

Our Large Animal Pens:

We are very excited to have these recently completed pens and working equipment for large animals on our campus.  These pens will be utilized in the Spring semester for our Large Animal  Assisting Techniques Lab.  We will house cattle, horses, pigs, sheep and goats throughout the semester. We have a cattle chute and alleyway that will be put into place in the near future.  Our equine stocks are already set in place and are ready to use!

We are looking at the awning that will cover our cattle chute.

The open area seen here will house the circular alleyway that will lead to the chute.

This is a view of the same awning from the south-east side.

You can see our storage/ hay shed, as well as the horse awning.

This is a view of the equine stocks.

You can also see one of the two holding pens in this shot.

Here is one of the two holding pens.

The Outdoor Dog Runs:

We love to use these outdoor dog runs- and the animals love it too!  The addition of these runs has allowed us to house larger dogs for the students to utilize in labs and in ward care rotations. There is a total of 6 runs inside the barrier fence complete with igloo dog houses. Our dogs are thrilled to be able to roam in the outside air!

This shot is directly in front of the runs.

Lecture/ Lab Classroom:

This is the place where the learning happens!!  Our students spend the majority of there time in this room!

Lab Room:

This is where most of our technical, or hands-on labs take place.  This facility includes a surgery suite, a treatment room, a radiology room- complete with x-ray unit and dark room, the indoor kennels, a rodent room, and a rabbit room.  A bathing area for large dogs is also housed in this facility.  You will find an office for one of our staff members here, to keep an eye on things.  Compare these photos with the future plans for a better idea of what our remodel will be like, and why we are all so excited!

This is our laboratory area- you see our exam tables, black cabinet that is our Pharmacy, and further down the tables and storage cabinets.

Here are our three exam tables with the supply carts.  These tables are used to perform physical exams, obtain venipuncture samples, and prepare patients for surgical procedures and anesthesia here!

This is our treatment room.  You can see our autoclave and surgical instrument cleaners in this shot as well as our endotracheal tube rack and storage cabinet for autoclaved items.

This is the other side of the treatment room- where our dentals are performed.  You can see the tub sink, and on the shelf is our dental unit and water blanket to help keep our patients warm during anesthesia.

This is the surgical suite.  This is where Dr. Coombs spays and neuters all of our Midland Animal Services animals, and where the students learn how to properly prepare for surgical procedures and anesthesia.

Another view of the surgical suite.  In this view you can see the pass-through cabinet for autoclaved items.

This is our radiology room.  We have a stationary and portable unit- with the stationary unit pictured here.  This room is lead lined to prevent radiation exposure of individuals in the laboratory area.

View two of the radiology room.  Here is our protective apparel that is worn by everyone in the radiology room .  Safety is one our our biggest commitments.

This is the dark room used for developing our radiographs.  Pictured here is our automatic processor.

This is also in the dark room.  This is our manual developer and dryer so our students learn how to develop x-rays both ways.  The storage box in the middle houses our radiographic film.

Here is the entrance to our animal ward facility.  We have 5 banks of kennels which house between 4 or 5 animals each.  The size of classes that we have in a semester usually determines the number of animal we house for the students to care for.

This is a view from the back of the animal ward, looking out the door.

This is our largest bank of kennels- housing 5 animals.

This is our rodent room.  We house rodents for our student to also learn how to care for.  Currently we have a guinea pig, two rats, two mice and a hamster.

Veterinary Technology Student's Resource Room:

This is a room dedicated to the students in the Veterinary Technology Program.  It is full of resources- textbook, journals, and videos to help the students complete research projects.  There is also a computer with internet access, and a printer for the students to use to complete online coursework, or to stay in touch with loved ones.

Future Plans:

There are big plans in the works for our facility!!  We are expecting a remodel of our current facility with the addition of a new clinical facility and class room.  Our current facility will be changed to provide a larger surgical room with the addition of mounted surgical lights, a scrub sink and two surgery tables, a larger treatment area with the addition of a dental radiography unit, and spot lights for dental procedures, a recovery room isolated from other animals for our surgical patients, and a functional kennel area that provides separate wards for the dogs and cats.  The new facility will simulate and function like a real clinic so the students get exposed to the proper procedures for working with clients and their pets.  It will include three exam rooms, a reception area, and a small laboratory area for preparing treatments and vaccinations.  We believe this will help our students with client communication, history taking skills, and basic veterinary clinic organization.  Below is a basic floor plan of what we expect to take place.            *Sorry for the yellow pictures*

This is our current lab facility- there will be an added wall to hide the laundry room and dog bath tub.  There will be a leaded glass window placed in between the surgery room and radiography room for protected viewing of patient positioning from radiation.  The counters on the left will be shortened to make movement around the lab easier!

This is how our surgical suite will look.  The addition of a scrub sink in the surgery room will benefit everyone!  There will be a long window on the left hand wall for surgical viewing in the gallery area.  There will be two treatment sinks mounted off of that wall into the lab for surgical preparation and dental procedures, as well as spot lights and a dental radiography unit.

Our animal ward will be split into two areas specifically for dogs on one side and cats on the other.  The room that is now utilized as an office will become our recovery ward for animals recovering from surgery.  The other side will house our rodents and rabbits during the Laboratory animal class.

This will be the new addition to our facilities- the Clinical Facility.  It will house a waiting room, reception area, 3 exam rooms with wall mounted folding exam tables, a lab area and an office!  We are extremely excited to be able to provide our students with a more realistic environment to help them with client education and communication.

This is the new addition again- showing the classroom that we will be able to utilize for our lecture classes.

This is the new addition to our facility again- this time showing the addition of three offices- one for each full-time staff member. this view also shows our large storage area which was desperately needed behind the reception area!
