Student Success - Alan White

Alan White

By Nancy Thorne
MC Public Relations Director

President and co-owner of Mid-Tex of Midland Alan White is somewhat reticent when asked about his success. Perhaps growing your company from $3.5 million in business annually to $65 million, in less than 20 years, could be called a success. Or, maybe success might be measured in terms of one’s legacy. Alan White and his wife, Melissa, have two children, Joey and Jenny. Joey is a freshman in the mechanical engineering program at Texas Tech University, living in Bledsoe Hall, the same one his father lived in thirty years ago. Jenny is a junior at Lee High School and ranked number 16 out of 639 students. College is a given for her; she just needs to decide whether she’ll pursue architecture or aerospace engineering.

By most standards, Alan White’s life is the epitome of success.

After he took general studies classes at MC from 1976 - 78, then earned his Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering at Texas Tech in 1982, he worked as a Construction Superintendent at Area Builders in Odessa, then became Chief Estimator at J.L. Moore Construction. He began working at Mid-Tex in 1985 and was able to purchase the company with Paul Renz in 1990. Mid-Tex serves as general contractor for many construction projects from “Abilene to Alpine.” In addition to building the Tom and Nadine Craddick Residence Hall in 2003, and converting an old Sears retail site into what is now MC’s Advanced Technology Center, Mid-Tex has become the general contractor for most of MC’s bond projects, including the recently-completed Helen L. Greathouse Children’s Center. Also under Mid-Tex’s supervision are expansions/renovations for the Physical Education Building, the Scharbauer Student Center, the Fox II Science Building and the Al. G. Langford Chaparral Center.

In these many projects Alan enjoys working with MC Vice President of Facilities Dennis Sever and Director of Physical Plant Ken Riley. “I have a great relationship with them … they are real professionals,” Alan said. In addition to working closely with MC staff, Mr. White has his own staff of over 100 employees at Mid-Tex, to whom he gives all credit. “I could not have done it without the terrific team I have,” he said.
