Who is THEA exempt?
You are exempt from taking the THEA if you:
Have tested at or above the following scores on the ACT, SAT, TAAS or TAKS tests:
- ACT: composite 23 with a minimum of 19 on English and/or Math will exempt you from the corresponding THEA section
- SAT: composite 1070 with a minimum of 500 on verbal and/or math will exempt you from the corresponding THEA section
- TAKS: 2200 on math, 2200 on English Language Arts with a writing subsection score of 3 will exempt you from the corresponding THEA section. Test scores must be from 10 th or 11 th grade only.
(ACT and SAT scores may be no more than 5 years old; TAKS no more than 3 years old)
- Have graduated from a public institution of higher education with an associate or baccalaureate degree from the State of Texas. Transcript is required.
- Transferred from other accredited institutions of higher education with appropriate college level work in the areas of writing, reading and/or math (Grades of “C” or higher) may be deemed as college-ready after review by the Registrar’s Office. Students not meeting college-readiness in writing, reading or mathematics will be required to take the THEA or COMPASS test for that area. Transcript is required. - Have met readiness standards of another Texas institution of higher education. Transcript is required.
- Are enrolled in a Level One certificate program with 42 or less semester hours.
- Are serving on active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States, the Texas National Guard, or a member of a reserve component, having served for at least 3 years preceding enrollment.
- Have been honorably discharged, retired or released from active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States or the Texas National Guard or from service as a member of the reserve component of the armed forces of the United States on or after August 1, 1990.
