Midland College Golf Coach Named to GCAA Hall of Fame
October 27, 2009
Delnor Poss, head coach of Midland College's acclaimed men's golf program, was recently selected for membership in the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame.
"He is highly deserving and has been a shining star in the coaching ranks, within the NJCAA and for our institution," said Forrest Allen, Midland College Athletic Director, in announcing Poss' selection. "We are honored by his leadership and the example he sets for our staff as well as the countless others whose lives he has touched."
"Coach Poss and his wife, Martha, have been invaluable members of our community for many, many years," Allen added.
This week, the Norman, Oklahoma-based Golf Coaches Association of America announced it would induct seven coaches - Maxie Boles, O.D. Bounds, Devon Brouse, Ronnie Choate, Steve Loy, Delnor Poss and Ben Thompson - in its 2009 Hall of Fame Class. The group will be officially honored at the GCAA Hall of Fame Reception and Awards Banquet Monday, December 7, at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The GCAA Hall of Fame selection is just the latest of numerous honors and accomplishments in Poss' career. Poss has served as golf coach at Midland College since 1978 and is the only coach in the program’s history. His teams have won four NJCAA national titles (1992, 1995, 2006 and 2008) and qualified for 22 consecutive NJCAA Tournaments. Poss is a three-time NJCAA Coach of the Year, and coached Team USA to a gold medal at the World University Games in Lausanne, Switzerland. A total of 39 players have earned All-America honors during his tenure. Poss also spent 18 years as MC’s Athletic Director and has served as basketball coach, physical education instructor and president of the Faculty Senate. Poss has previously been named to the Hardin-Simmons University Athletic Hall of Fame, NJCAA Hall of Fame, Midland College Hall of Fame and Western Junior College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Poss, a native of San Angelo, Texas, received his BBA from Hardin-Simmons University and his M.Ed from Sul Ross State University. He is the proud husband of Martha and the equally proud parent of Nathan of El Paso, Texas; Del Jr. (and his wife Peggy Ann) of Madison, Wisconsin; and Mark (and his wife Maria) of Vienna, Virginia. Poss has two wonderful grandchildren, Emil and Alexandra, who are - as he says - "his raison d’etre."
