PGA names Midland College a “Play Golf America University”
April 1, 2009
The Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of America has designated Midland College as an institutional partner in a nationwide player development program devoted to teaching and engaging college students in the sport of golf.
“On behalf of The PGA of America and 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup Team member, Chad Campbell, it is my pleasure to recognize Midland College as an official Play Golf America University, which will help students at your fine institution become exposed to golf and learn how their ability to play the sport can lead to future career enhancement,” Jim Remy, President of The PGA of America, wrote in a letter to Dr. Eileen Piwetz, MC’s Vice President of Institutional Advancement.
The designation, Remy went on to explain, came through the recommendation of PGA Tour professional and Ryder Cup Team member Chad Campbell. A native of Andrews, Texas, Campbell was a part of a strong junior college men's golf squad at Midland College from 1992-1994. Campbell was a WJCAC medalist, NJCAA medalist and an NJCAA All-American while helping the Chaparrals win WJCAC conference and NJCAA regional titles.
“Through the 2008 Ryder Cup Outreach program, U.S. Ryder Cup Team members selected universities and colleges of their choice to receive funding from the PGA of America in order to host Play Golf America University program elements,” Remy wrote. “Since the program began in 1999, a total of $13-million has been donated to institutions like yours on behalf of the Ryder Cup Team members and captains. Thanks to Chad Campbell, the PGA is pleased to provide financial support to help your college develop and coordinate a Play Golf America University program of your own.”
Play Golf America University is a player development program designed to teach and engage college students in the sport of golf through PGA professional instruction and other golf programs. Through the program, students not only learn to play golf, but also learn how golf can be employed as a business tool as they enter the professional world. |
