AUDITIONS

All prospective music majors must schedule an audition with the Department of Music. Dates for auditions are listed below. When you arrive for your audition, you will be greeted and asked to:

1. Perform two contrasting pieces of your choosing, each from different style periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Twentieth-Century). We suggest that you choose pieces that demonstrate to us your highest technical and musical accomplishments.

2. Complete a written entrance assessment. The assessment will be used to gauge your current understanding of music theory and history so that our music faculty can recommend an appropriate course of study for you.

3. Meet with a member of our music faculty.

DATES FOR AUDITIONS

Audition dates for prospective Fall 2009 music majors are:

Saturday, March 21, 2009
Friday, March 27, 2009
Saturday, March 28, 2009

After your Music Major Application has been received, we will contact you to arrange a time for your audition. If you can not make one of the above dates, please contact one of our music directors to make alternative arrangements. In case you cannot visit Midland College for a live audition, we will also accept an unedited, high-quality audio or video recording instead. Please see the Music Major Application for audio / video recording deadlines.

PREPARING FOR MUSIC STUDY

Studying music is an exciting adventure, but also a challenging one. To best prepare for this experience, we offer the following suggestions:

1. Consider gaining a rudimentary understanding of music theory before studying music at Midland College. We suggest that you purchase and complete the Alfred’s Essentials of Music Theory Software, Version 2.0

2. Consider gaining an overview of music history before studying music at Midland College. We suggest that you purchase and read Experience Music! by Charlton & Hickok.
