INTRODUCTION From Bach to Bebop, Symphonies to Swing, Classical to Cool Jazz, let us introduce you to the incredible possibilities for performance and study at Midland College. Whether you are considering a career in music or just wish to continue your involvement, we encourage students from all disciplines to join one of our performing ensembles, study privately with our outstanding faculty or gain insight and understanding into new musical genres in one of our Music Appreciation or Music History courses. As part of our musical family, you will experience low student-to-faculty ratios, a warm and inviting learning atmosphere, as well as a dedicated, professional music faculty. Come experience a rewarding learning opportunity by studying music at MC today. Performance Opportunities At Midland College, we believe that student success begins with friendship and teamwork. With this in mind, we invite all students to join one of our MC performing ensembles. Do you enjoy singing? Perhaps joining our MC Jazz Singers, Chorale, Chamber Singers, or Women’s / Men’s Choir will inspire you. Are you an instrumentalist at heart? Try one of our many instrumental ensembles: Orchestra, Woodwind, Brass, String, Percussion, or Jazz. In addition to these fine ensembles, all students are encouraged to perform on our Friday afternoon student recitals. Allison Fine Arts Building The Department of Music, nestled within the Allison Fine Arts Building, is Midland College’s center for the musical arts. Within the Department of Music, you will find Wagner and Brown Auditorium, a 250-seat performing space that houses our Steinway Model B grand piano. Surrounding Wagner and Brown are practice rooms, a state-of-the-art piano laboratory, as well as a lecture hall used by our music history courses. Gracing the outer halls of the Fine Arts building is the McCormick Art Gallery and Studio 3600, a place where MC arts students inspire us with their outstanding artistic works. Piano Laboratory A rudimentary understanding of piano technique is an indispensable skill for any musician. To introduce students to this area of study, all non-piano majors are required to enroll in at least two semesters of class piano. Currently, our piano lab consists of twelve Yamaha CLP153SG Clavinova keyboards, a Keynote Visualizer, a Yamaha MLC-100 Music Laboratory System with headphones, as well as two Roland MT-200 Digital Sequencers. Scholarship Assistance The Department of Music is pleased to offer prospective music students several scholarship possibilities based on merit. Questions? Feel free to contact any faculty member if you have questions. |
