Adult and Developmental Education • Adult Basic Education

Adult Basic Education (ABE) offers a variety of programs to help adults increase their academic and workforce skills. Students are provided with the opportunity to improve their skills in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and English. There are no fees for any ABE program.   Students in ABE classes receive direct instruction and may supplement instruction via online programs that help students work at their own level and progress at their own speed.

Students preparing to take the GED® test are given instruction in reading, writing, social studies, science, and math. An online learning system, the Aztec Learning System, is available to assist students.  Aztec can be accessed from Midland College campus-based computers and on the Internet for home study.

ESL classes provide students the opportunity to improve their speaking, reading, writing, and listening English language skills. These skills are taught in conjunction with life skills to help the student function fully in the community. ESL classes are also provided for Spanish-speakers seeking to pass the GED® test in Spanish. ESL offers an ESC class for Resident Legal Aliens who want immigration and naturalization information to prepare for American citizenship.  ESC classes focus on U.S. Government with American history topics.

ABE classes are held at various locations including the main campus, Cogdell Learning Center,  Workforce Solution - Permian Basin, and at the WRTTC in Fort Stockton.  Midland College ABE is involved in community partnerships with MISD, MISD Even Start, Casa de Amigos, and Midland Need to Read programs. Additional class sites and community partnerships are established as determined by needs and funding.

An orientation class is required before students enter the instructional classes. Individuals must be at least 17 years of age to enroll.  All persons interested in enrolling in classes need to call the ABE department at 685-6819 or 685-6817 for more information.
