Adult and Developmental Education offers a variety of programs to help adults increase their academic and workforce skills. The objectives of adult education are to teach literacy, to refresh basic academic skills, to help non-English speakers and those with limited English proficiency to learn the English language, to help legal resident aliens prepare for the Citizenship test, and to prepare adults without a high school diploma or its equivalent for the GED test. Students are provided with the opportunity to improve their skills in reading, math, science, social studies, language arts, and English. There are no fees for any ADE program.
Programs offered by this department are:
• General Educational Development (GED)
• General Educational Development (GED) Testing Schedule
• English as a Second Language (ESL), ESL for Citizenship Preparation, Spanish-support GED
• Labs
Adult Basic Education is designed for persons who would like to learn to read and write or improve their basic academic skills. Students in GED classes receive direct instruction and may supplement instruction via online programs that help students work at their own level and progress at their own speed. Students preparing to take the GED tests are given instruction in writing, social studies, science, reading, and math. An online learning system, the Aztec Learning System, is available to assist students in obtaining a GED. The Aztec can be accessed from Midland College campus-based computers and on the Internet for home study. Spanish-support GED classes are also provided for Spanish-speakers seeking to pass the GED exam in Spanish. ESL classes provide students the opportunity to improve their speaking, reading, writing, and listening English language skills. These skills are taught in conjunction with life skills to help the student function fully in the community. The ESL for Citizenship Preparation class is for resident legal aliens who want to prepare for American citizenship.
ABE classes are held at various locations including the main campus, Cogdell Learning Center, Casa de Amigos, Workforce Network, and at the WRTTC in Fort Stockton. All persons interested in classes, the ADE department at 685-6819 or 685-6817 for more information.
