Free Lectures on "Oil Spills, Ethics and Society"
Monday and Tuesday, April 2 and 3 ― Midland College is proud to offer, FREE of charge, a lecture by noted geoscientist Dr. Rusty Riese, who will speak on two occasions about “Oil Spills, Ethics and Society: How they intersect and where the responsibilities reside.” Dr. Riese brings to the podium 39 years' experience as a geologist, geochemist, manager, author and educator.

Davidson Distinguished Lecture Series presents Dr. Jane Goodall
Thursday, April 4 ― Jane Goodall, legendary environmentalist and chimpanzee researcher, knew at age eight that she wanted to go to Africa and live with wild animals when she grew up. After sixteen years, with a diploma from the Queen's Secretarial School in London and her love of animals, she went after her dream and sailed to Africa.
West Texas Symposium of History

Hilda Simmons Levitt Poetry Contest Awards & Reading
Tuesday, April 16 ― Texas poet and educator William Wenthe will give a reading along with the winners of this year's Hilda Simmons Levitt Poetry Contest at an awards celebration in the Carrasco Room of the Dorothy and Clarence Scharbauer, Jr. Student Center, on the Midland College campus.
Phyllis & Bob Cowan Performing Arts Series presents Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
Wednesday, April 17 ― 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's remarkable arrival onto the music scene, when they secured their legendary residency at the Derby nightclub in Los Angeles and reminded the world — in the middle of the grunge era, no less — that it was still cool to swing, big band style.

Sonia Ford Receives "Quality Matters Recognized" Certification
Sonia Ford’s online course, Math 1314 College Algebra, was reviewed by a Quality Matters Peer Review Team and has been awarded the “Quality Matters Recognized” certification. To receive this certification, the course met 21 essential QM standards and earned a total of 89/95 points. The review team complimented Ms. Ford on her “instructor presence” throughout the online course and on how she provides multiple opportunities for students to measure their own learning progress. One reviewer stated, “In addition to assessing math skills, the students are given information and self-assessment about study skills, test taking strategies, learning styles, etc., that will not only help them in the math class but throughout their lives.”

Biggest Loser Contest
Congratulations to Jeff McDonald and Lori Thomas for winning the Biggest Loser Contest!! Great job to both of you!! There was a total of 48.23% weight lost all together! We will be having another contest in the Fall. We will be starting at the beginning of the Fall semester!! So, start planning now for the great challenge!!
Dr. Pat Nandakumar featured in Annual Report
During the summer of 2012, MC Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. Pat Nandakumar received a grant to work at the Department of Energy Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She was notified last week that a photo taken of her during her summer research was selected to be featured on page 9 of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities annual report (Adobe .pdf file).

Inventory Deadline Reminder
Please remind your students that if they are needing to take proctored exams, whether for online classes, make-up exams, etc., that they need to schedule a day and time with the Testing Center. The Center is usually able to accommodate walk-ins, but not always. Scheduling exams will save students from having to come back. Also, remind students of the time frame for the test; the student cannot come back another day to complete the exam.
Jerry Myszka, Jefferson National Life Insurance Company representative, will be available for appointments in the Administrative Services Conference Room on Tuesday, 3/26/13 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jefferson National manages our 7% Tax Deferred Annuity (TDA) account. New employees are especially encouraged to meet with Jerry. Please call the Human Resources office to schedule your appointment with Jerry.
