Kudos and Accomplishments

Special thanks and HUGE kudos to Dr. Deana Savage who led efforts for the SACS Commission on Colleges Second Monitoring Report.  The report was put in the mail last week.  We will know results of the review the end of June.  Other members working diligently on the report include Dr. Mary Braselton, Dr. Tom Corll, Sylvia Escarsega, Rose Flores, Sylvia Gray, Lesley Isaacs, Dr. Donna Thompson and Crystal Velasquez.
The report is available on the MC Intranet.

Kudos to Dr. Glenda Lindsey-Hicks who presented some of her original works of poetry during the MC English Department's "Pizza, Poetry and People" event on Thursday, March 28.  Dr. Hicks' reading was truly breathtaking as she presented her works based on her interpretations of renowned paintings.  The event was coordinated by Dr. Diane Allen, Chair of the English Department.

Congratulations to Sonia Ford for being selected to present at the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC) Conference in October.

Thanks to Alfredo Chaparro, Brenda Cordero, Rey Hernandez, Richard Jolly, Adriana Lumpkin, Vickie Pickett, Heather Sanders and Liz Zenteno for being on site at Wal Mart on Saturday, April 6, to promote MC and answer questions about MC programs of study and special events.  Once again, special kudos to Vickie Pickett and Rey Hernandez who stayed the entire time.

Dr. Diane Allen’s online course, English 2311 Technical Writing, was reviewed by a Quality Matters Peer Review Team and has been awarded the “Quality Matters Recognized” certification. To receive this certification, the course met 21 essential QM standards and earn a total of 93/95 points.  The review team complimented Dr. Allen on her use of media to support course objectives stating, “From the SoftChalk lessons to the self-guided videos, students have great tools and websites that support the goals of the course.”  Another reviewer complimented her on how she explains the purpose of the instructional materials and how they are to be used for learning activities, stating, “The learning units do a great job of leading the students through the instructional activities and explain the purpose of the activities. Excellent work with explaining the “Why” behind the learning activities.”

Possible Methods to Retain and Increase Enrollment
As you know, our enrollment has been slipping over the last two long semesters between 6 - 8 percent.  While our community is in the midst of an economic boom, for which we are very grateful, we cannot and should not become complacent waiting on economic times to decline and our enrollment to increase.  Theoretically, when economic times are good is when individuals should be going to school - not only to be more productive and marketable, but also to protect their jobs and careers when the economy slows down and jobs become less plentiful later.  A group of MC employees from across the college have been working on various ideas to retain and increase enrollment.  They, in turn, have gathered ideas from some of their colleagues.  A compilation of their efforts is contained in this report (Adobe .pdf file).

This list is intended to help strengthen the college rather than to embarrass or hurt anyone.  This is by no means a comprehensive list, but really just a beginning.  The Enrollment Management Standing Committee will take these ideas and work to implement any they deem appropriate.  You are invited to add to the list, comment on the list, or seek positive changes within your own department.    Please contact Dr. Michael Chavez if you have any additions/comments.

2013-2014 Academic Calendar is now available
The calendar may be accessed on the website by clicking on the "Employees" tab and then scrolling down to "Calendars."  An Adobe .pdf copy is also available here.

Learning Management System Change
After a year of assessment and a vote by faculty, MC is changing its LMS platform from Blackboard to Canvas.  Added features include superior interfaces for desktop browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.) and special content delivery capabilities designed for mobile web enabled devices (iPhones, iPads, Android phones and tablets, etc.).  The "cloud based" Canvas system will also provide continual availability.  Faculty and students will find loading and accessing course content such as audio and video clips much easier.  Canvas provides native communication channels with popular social media sites and interfaces with third-party systems such as Turn-It-In, Panopto CourseCast, SoftChalk, etc.

The Information Technology Department has developed an implementation schedule (Adobe .pdf file).  Please watch your e-mail for announcements of training and consulting opportunities.  If you have questions or concerns, please contact Dennis Sever.
