The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects this occupation and its related occupations to increase 10 to 20 percent nationally by 2012 because of increasing population, income and demand for personal appearance services. Most cosmetologists are employed in beauty salons or barber shops, but they are also found in nail salons, department stores, nursing and other residential care homes, and drug and cosmetics stores. This opens a larger opportunity for graduates of programs to find and gain employment, whether as self-employed or as a part of a company or facility.

Competition is expected for jobs at higher paying salons which employ multi-skilled workers which include:

• hairdressers
• stylists
• manicure and pedicure technicians
• skin care specialists (estheticians)
• hair shampooing and conditioning specialists
