Parent Tips
Parents want the best future for their children,
and this often includes helping them get a college education. You want
to maximize their potential for a fulfilling life and career. You want
a college with academic excellence along with a personal and supportive
environment.
There are several things you need to remember before
they go:
- Plan a budget with them. Discuss who pays for what – tuition,
books, housing, and personal expenses.
- Make sure they know the mechanics of banking – ATM’s,
debit cards, check-writing. Discuss the pros and cons of
credit cards.
- Discuss academic goals. Be interested,
but not critical, of their course selection. They need to take
ownership of their education.
- Remind them that they are responsible for attending class and
completing assignments. Discuss the consequences of failing or
not completing classes.
- Teach them how to cook and do laundry, if they will be living
away from home.
- Discuss medical emergencies and how to
handle lesser medical problems – colds, burns, etc. If they
have their own car, go over maintenance and provide registration,
insurance, and accident forms.
- Provide emergency contact numbers – family,
neighbors, doctors, etc.
