COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
 

AMERICAN INDIAN STUDIES - With a background of Cherokee, Choctaw and Creek heritage, our expert instructor will provide exciting information about the arts, culture and history of American Indians. The exact content is largely student-driven, with particular emphasis on those topics of interest to the current enrollees. In addition to classes on American Indian history, other topics may address music, arts and crafts, and current events. The instructor has been involved in American Indian education and cultural preservation for many years.

COMPUTER BASICS - This course is designed to teach the basic skills to use a PC computer. The course looks at both the hardware aspect of working with a computer as well as the Windows XP operating systems. Learning goals are to discuss the different hardware components of a computer, explain different terminology for computer hardware, explore the Windows operating system and create shortcuts, change settings and perform most of the common Windows activities.

GRAPHOLOGY - Ever wonder why some writers have small writing, others large; why some slant right, others left; why some have narrow margins, others have no margins at all; why some have round lettering, others angular. You will learn how these and other characteristics in a person's writing identify his/her personality.

HISTORY OF CHINA - This course will cover history from the earliest times to the present and will be a continuous course of study.

FROM MONET TO VAN GOGH - An overview of Impressionism making use of 24, 30 minute presentations. At each of the eight meetings, three of the presentations will be given in the following manner: two 30 minute presentations, followed by a 15 minute break, followed by one 30 minute presentation. Total time for the class is one hour and forty-five minutes.

MOVIES IN REVIEW - An overview of the best books, periodicals, websites and resources on the film industry, actors, directors, techniques, and related topics. Most critically acclaimed films, miniseries, and documentaries; genres of historical, “biopics“, literary, comedy, musical, film noir, sports, Westerns, science fiction, fantasy and others. Discover hundreds of films and resources in the Midland College collection. American films are emphasized, with some attention to international films.

POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY - Continuation from last spring of choosing countries to study politically and geographically. This fall, the countries are Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand.

TONING WITH TAP DANCE - A healthy low impact aerobic workout combined with easy tap routines. No dance background necessary. Great to tone up and have fun! Tap shoes helpful but not required.

VOICES FROM THE PAST: WOMEN ON THE FRONTIER ARMY POSTS - Although the United States Army never officially recognized the presence of most women on frontier army post, they were there providing a “settling“ influence for the soldiers and the land. Step back in time and hear the stories of the women who helped tame the West. The presentation will include historic pictures and information about officer's wives, laundresses, and townswomen of the Texas frontier. Learn about upcoming Living History events held in the West Texas where you can visit and immerse yourself in hands-on learning about Texas and western history.
