Asset Building Conference
The Midland College Business and Economic Development Center (BEDC) hosted the Asset Building Conference on Wednesday, September 24, 2008. One hundred thirty five individuals interested in building stronger communities attended the conference. The conference site was the Midland Hilton Plaza in downtown Midland, Texas.
Asset Building: Any solution that encourages individuals to save, reduce expenses or build productive assets. Productive assets generate revenues and/or increase in value over time.
Examples of Asset Building: Small business development, first-time home buyer assistance, financial literacy programs, free income tax preparation assistance, credit counseling, Individual Development Accounts (matched savings programs), etc.
Purpose: To educate community leaders about asset building and facilitate asset building solutions.
The Midland College BEDC received a $600,000 Hispanic Serving Institutions Assisting Communities (HSIAC) grant in 2007 from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). That grant implemented the first Individual Development Account (IDA) program in the Permian Basin area. Thanks to the support from the City of Midland and Midland College, the BEDC will present this conference in the hopes of facilitating asset building solutions.
