COLORADO SPRINGS -- The No. 4-ranked Midland College women's baketball team was tested in its first game at the Air Force Academy Classic.
Playing with a lead for most of the game, but unable to pull away, the Lady Chaparrals defeated No. 8 Western Nebraska 71-63 on Friday. While a victory against a ranked opponent was nice, coach Ron Jones wasn't fully satisfied.
"We played hard," Jones said. "But we had a lot of defensive mistakes that allowed easier baskets than we'd like to give up. (Western Nebraska) kept it closer than it should have been. They're No. 8 in the country, though, so it's a quality win."
Lauren Mansfield paced the Lady Chaps offense with 15 points and Heather Sheppard and Brittany Wilson also scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
With the victory, Midland College (6-1) handed Western Nebraska its first loss of the season.
