Head Coach Grant McCasland

Coach McCasland concluded his 3rd season at Midland College culminating the Chaps' distinction as a basketball power, winning the 2007 NJCAA National Championship. A lifetime's work and a dream realized in a very young career.

McCasland was named NJCAA Coach of the Year, NJCAA Coach of the Tournament, TABC Junior College Coach of the Year, and the District 5 Coach of the Year for the second time.

In his first three seasons, the Chaps have chalked up an 82-24 (.774) overall record, have two appearances in the NJCAA National Tournament, two NJCAA Region V Championship titles.

Last season began with a preseason No. 1 ranking (2006-07) and the Chaps have also been ranked as high as 10 th (2005-06) in the nation, with a preseason ranking of 3 rd this season (2007-08).

Every team with Coach McCasland at the helm has produced 26 or more wins and includes 3 consecutive trips to the NJCAA Region V Finals.

Additionally, over the past two seasons McCasland has seen his former players move on to various colleges and universities across the U. S. That list includes eleven to NCAA Division I institutions: Nemanja Calasan (Purdue), PJ Hill (Ohio State), Jordan Brooks (Idaho), Rodrigue Mels (Cal State Northridge), JD Lewis (University of Texas), Tristan Martin (University of Houston), Mamery Diallo (Gonzaga University, WA), Ivory Clark (Washington State University), Daviin Davis (Weber State University, UT), Tim Crowell (University of Cincinnati) and Arturas Valeika (Weber State University, UT).

Many former players have also received awards including 1 National Tournament MVP, 3 National Tournament Team selections, 6 All-Region V, 9 WJCAC All-Conference, and 3 WJCAC All-Conference HM.

Before taking over the head coaching duties in 2004, McCasland served as an assistant to mentor Shanon Hays for one season. That season included a trip to the NJCAA national tournament, 3 rd Place finish, NJCAA Region V Championship, WJCAC Championship and 30 wins. An integral part of that year, McCasland found out what it took to be apart of a championship caliber team. That trip to ‘HUTCH'inson, KS, home of the NJCAA National Tournament turned out to be his first of three trips in four years.

McCasland came to Midland College from Sterling , CO where he was a member of the coaching staff at Northeastern Junior College . In his two seasons at NJC the team averaged more than 20 wins and had 15 players move on to four-year universities. Prior to his time in Sterling , Grant served as the Director of Basketball Operations at Texas Tech University. At TTU, McCasland was involved in on-campus recruiting, team travel, scheduling, coordinating summer camps and directing a coaching clinic.

Coach McCasland played collegiate basketball at Baylor University and was a four-year player there. While on the BU team, Grant was named to the Big 12 Conference All-Academic second team and he helped lead the Bears to their best Big 12 record in the school's history.

McCasland earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a double major in Entrepreneurship and Management from Baylor in 1999. He also earned a Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Texas Tech University in 2001.

Coach McCasland attributes his coaching success to his family, especially his wife Cece who is his best friend and partner in life, as well as, their two children, daughter Amaris (age 3) and son Jett (age 2).

Teamwork. Unselfishness. Family atmosphere. Defensive intensity. An emphasis on academic achievement. Hard work. Personal integrity. These characteristics remain the foundation for the Midland College basketball program under Coach Grant McCasland.
