About the Abell-Hanger Foundation
The Abell-Hanger Foundation, established by George and Gladys Abell, epitomizes the outstanding community college benefactor. This Foundation has assisted not only a college, but an entire community by making education possible for many individuals who do not have the financial resources to take advantage of post-secondary education. They established many scholarships (listed below) and were the founders of what is now Midland's Legacy Scholarship.

Abell-Hanger Academic Scholarship
Established in 1974, this scholarship is awarded to a worthy student who has a minimum GPA of 3.0 and is enrolled as a full time or career student. The scholarship may apply towards tuition and fees to $1000 per year. A General Academic Scholarship Application is required and awards are made by the Financial Aid Scholarship Committee.

Abell-Hanger Education Continuance Scholarship (ECS)
Renewable for two (2) years or four (4) semesters if qualifications are met.
Eligibility:
Student must be a Legacy (click here for more information), GED or SIP scholarship recipient (in good standing) at Midland College. Student must graduate with an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree from Midland College and participate in the graduation ceremony.
Qualifications:
Student must provide proof of financial need via a Federal Aid Application (SAR). Student must be a citizen of the State of Texas and the United States and attend an accredited public college or university in Texas (and be accepted). Recipients of the ECS scholarship must provide 25 hours of community service each semester.
GPA:
Student must have a final grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Maintain Eligibility :
Student must provide proof that they has completed at least 12 hours per semester with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Student must provide proof of financial need via a Federal Aid Application (SAR). Student must provide proof of completing 25 hours of community service each semester.

Abell-Hanger GED Scholarship
This scholarship covers tuition and fees up to $650 per semester for full time enrollment. The scholarship is only applicable for Fall and Spring semesters. Summer and interim sessions are not covered. The scholarship does not include books. Students must use the scholarship in the semester offered. Funds may not be exceeded or carried forward.
If awarded, in order to receive this scholarship, the student must enroll in at least 6 hours per semester.
Requirements & Guidelines
1. Certification: Student must have taken and passed the GED within the past 12 months at Midland College.
2. Scholastic Achievement: This is a competitive scholarship based on GED scores.
3. Time Limit: The scholarship is awarded for up to four consecutive semesters or two years from the date the scholarship is awarded as long as the student maintains satisfactory academic progress and meets the guidelines listed below.
4. Maintain Eligibility: Students must complete 75% of the courses for which they are funded with at least a 2.0 GPA. If a student does not meet these requirements, the scholarship will be forfeited until satisfactory academic progress is attained. Students who completely withdraw from all classes will forfeit the scholarship.

Abell Hanger Nursing
This Scholarship covers tuition, fees and books up to $300 per semester for full time enrollment. The Scholarship is only applicable for Fall and Spring semesters, no summer or interim sessions are covered. Students must use the scholarship in the semester offered. Funds may not be exceeded or carried over. Application available in Financial Aid Office.
Requirements and Guidelines
1. Eligibility: Recipient must be a LVN or RN student.
2. Recipient must be classified as a full-time student.
3. GPA: Recipient must have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 system.
4. Recipient can renew scholarship by applying and being selected again by the Nursing Department.

Legacy Essay Scholarship
Students awarded the Freshman and Sophomore Midland Legacy Scholarship are also eligible to enter the Legacy Essay Contest. Five essays are selected. The winning essayists receive a $500 Scholarship award. The contest is held in the Fall and Spring semesters each year. Abell-Hanger Students in Philanthropy (SIP) Scholarship
The SIP program is an annual educational leadership program which begins each Fall semester and ends upon completion of the Spring semester. Applications for the 2008/2009 year will be available in the Financial Aid Offices in January, 2008.
Requirements & Guidelines
1. Eligibility: Student must be a high school graduate and/or currently enrolled at Midland College.
2. GPA: Incoming high school graduates must have 3.1 or higher based on a 4.0 system. Current Midland College students must have and maintain an overall GPA of 2.75 or higher based on a 4.0 system.
3. Commitment: Students must make a commitment of one full academic year to the program, beginning the Fall semester and ending upon completion of the Spring semester. This commitment includes meeting a minimum of one hour weekly at a preset time throughout the SIP program year.
4. Coverage Limits: Students already receiving Midland's Legacy Scholarship are eligible for up to $500 per semester for books only. Students not receiving Midland's Legacy Scholarship funds are eligible for up to $800 per semester for tuition and books. Scholarships are awarded for up to 25 students selected to participate in the Students in Philanthropy program. The scholarship is only applicable for the Fall and Spring semesters; no summer or interim sessions are covered. Funds may not be exceeded or carried forward.
5. Maintain Eligibility: students must maintain a minimum of nine credit hours per semester with a 2.75 GPA or better based on a 4.0 system. Students must comply with and fulfill all related responsibilities of the Students in Philanthropy Club Guidelines. If the student does not meet the requirements, the scholarship will be forfeited.
