About the Fire Service

Firefighting today is a complicated, multi-faceted profession, requiring continuous training and physical stamina. The firefighter of today is getting into the service at a younger age, is in better physical condition, and is better educated. Many have bachelors and Master degrees. Today's fire service is very much into the information age, with many more services offered than just responding to fires. Besides fire suppression, we now do fire prevention, inspections, and have our own policing system - better known as arson investigators; also included are EMS services, hazardous materials response. Since September 11, 2001 the fire service has taken an active roll in homeland security. The firefighter's responsibilities are wide, varied, and continue to expand at a rapid rate.Today's professional is not just a firefighter, he is an EMT/Paramedic, educator, public speaker, scientist, fire prevention expert, arson investigator, policeman, aircraft firefighter, marine firefighter, communications expert, clown, hazardous materials expert, and now, since 9-11-01, terrorist experts as well. Gone are the days of just riding in the big red trucks and hauling hoses into the fire to put "put out the fires." Now, more than ever, there are many things he or she has to know. It is the goal of Midland College and the goal of the Fire Protection Department to provide the best possible education and training of basic firefighters, and to the experienced firefighter, and to provide the education necessary for advancment
